Lies You Never Told Me ARC by Jennifer Donaldson (SPOILER FREE)

YA Thriller/Mystery Contemporary Fiction, 325 pages
This was one of the novels I received at Yallwest this year, and I am so glad that I picked it up. I didn’t have a lot to go on when I started this novel, as my ARC version has the front blank and the back contains the title of the book. However, there was a little blurb on the inside cover:
The more secrets she keeps, the more lies she tells.
He’s haunted by rumors he can’t control.
A fresh start means no more mistakes.
She will do anything to get Gabe back.
This book was told with dual POV’s between Gabe and Elyse. In the beginning, I just assumed that the characters would cross paths at some point, but before I could realize I was wrong, I was so invested in both stories that I didn’t care that they didn’t.
The character development was tremendous, and I was so impressed by her characters and writing, I can’t get over it. Each of the four main characters mentioned above were very connected and very dark. There were some mature themes throughout the novel, and the plot was deeply rooted in the relationship choices Elyse and Gabe made. I don’t usually read thriller novels, but this one made me want to enjoy more of the genre.
The dialogue was interesting, and I was always wanting to know what was going to happen next, and the creepy vibe was there. The writing style was so good, but I can’t tell you more without ruining the novel.
It was definitely a mystery novel and the ending scene was a real thriller. The ending was so well executed that I highly recommend this book. I had to go back and reread most of the book once I figured it out because I was so shocked that I missed what had been happening the whole time. This is probably one of my favorite novels of 2018, and I’m so glad I had gotten to read it early. I literally ranted on my Insta as soon as I finished it!
This is Jennifer Donaldson’s debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. It would be an automatic purchase from me!
Overall, I give this book 5/5 stars! As I had spent quite a while thinking about it, and then telling other people about it. I will definitely never forget this novel, and I highly recommend it!
Thank you for reading guys! I can’t wait for Jennifer Donaldson’s next novel!
